How is AI influencing jobs during 2024?

The increasingly widespread use of AI requires professionals who can handle these tools and interpret the data generated by them, as well as implement and maintain their systems and software.

Much has been discussed in the industry regarding how the incorporation of artificial intelligence tools is affecting jobs in companies. Some anticipate waves of layoffs, while others highlight opportunities for new hires. To elucidate this scenario, we spoke with sector experts who gave us their vision.

According to data from Layoffs.fyi, a site that tracks layoffs in the global technology industry, in 2023 there were more than 260,000 layoffs in more than 1,100 companies in the sector worldwide, an increase of 59% compared to 2022. Among the reasons Of the layoffs, in fourth position, with 39%, is the replacement of workers through the use of generative artificial intelligence. However, although this technology has caused the dismissal of workers in different areas, it has also allowed organizations and their collaborators to develop in other areas, reinventing themselves and restructuring the way they do jobs.

“There is a need for professionals who can develop, implement and maintain all the systems and software behind the implementation of technologies, as well as interpret the data generated by these tools,” says Luz María García, general manager of the Chilean Association of Information Technology Companies (ACTI A.G.). The expert comments that a study carried out by the US National Bureau of Economic Research found that the introduction of a Gen AI in a customer service center increased agent productivity by 14% on average.

Experts maintain that the implementation of Gen AI is reinventing jobs, mainly those where technology can replace repetitive and systematic tasks. This technology is providing an opportunity to open new avenues of employment.

New skills and knowledge are required

In the opinion of Franco Toselli, partner at IT HUNTER INTERNATIONAL, in the very near future, the use and mastery of AI tools will be as indispensable as Office products (Excel, PowerPoint and Word). “Not mastering them can represent, for an individual, a competitive disadvantage in their company, compared to their peers,” he warns.

The expert adds that, in the field of technology and computing, the demand for profiles with knowledge in AI is increasing, such as artificial intelligence analyst, AI developer, artificial intelligence architect, artificial intelligence leader, GenAI engineer and Machine Learning consultant. Salaries for these professionals vary significantly depending on experience, education, company, and location. On average, they can expect to earn between $1,500,000 and $3,500,000 in liquid Chilean pesos per month (between US$1,583 and US$3,693).
